Feature Spotlight is a series of posts to highlight key and interesting features of BrewScene. This post will feature Category and Subcategory Settings that organizers can use to customize their competition.

When a competition is created on BrewScene, the BJCP 2008 competition style categories and subcategories (BJCP 2015 coming soon) are automatically loaded. This is usually a good starting point for most competitions, but they can certainly be changed. BrewScene allows you to delete categories and subcategories, create your own custom categories and subcategories, combine categories, and move existing subcategories into different categories. This flexibility allows you to create the exact competition you want.

Some subcategories require notes to be provided by the brewer in order to be able to accurately judge the beer. BrewScene allows you to set which subcategories require entrants to provide notes and will not allow an entry to be entered in the subcategory without notes being provided. No more tracking down the brewers who didn’t enter entry notes!

Want to set the maximum number of entries that can be entered in a single category? Simple. Each category can have its own entry limit or can be set to have no limit.

At the subcategory level, you can also set the limit of the number of beers a single entrant can enter in the subcategory. This can be set to any number or set to no limit to allow entrants to be able to enter as many beers in the subcategory as they want.
